Golden City Walls
Blue Mountains, Australia.

Where else in the world can you find a city surrounded by golden walls?
The Blue Mountains is renowned for the blue haze seemingly standing at odds with a vast landscape saturated by green eucalypt is lined by rich golden walls in some areas over 500m high.

HANGING ROCK
Blue Mountains, Australia.

This slice of ancient sandstone reflects the sunlight bright. It ignores the norms of the walls in the Gross Valley and leans out in a grand golden and defiant display.

Like fire Hanging Rock demands attention. The rock temps you to forget about the vast, open & unending valley that unnervingly drops off immediately right under your feet.

The images in this collection are a reflection of the changing atmosphere & mood found in this world renowned location. Meenhi, Wimlah & Gunnedoo will be central to any landscape photographic collection shot in the Blue Mountains. This is a record of my experiences moving around this space.

I acknowledge & pay respect to the past, present & future custodians & elders of this landscape & the continuation of cultural, spiritual and educational practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In particular the people that lived & moved through the Upper & Lower Blue Mountains, Darug, Gundungurra, Wiradjuri, Wanaruah, Darkinjung & Tharawal people.

SHADOW SCRIPT
This place is mesmerizing, it seems to defy gravity. Every day the light is different, altered by our atmosphere. Water vapour & dust causes the sunlight to diffuse & disperse, silently interacting with the landscape Each of the elements intertwined in a dance ensuring nothing will reflect the same light again.

Early in the morning & again late in the afternoon moments of sunlight uncover intricate shape & texture on these grand walls. The hardened rock faces rise up out of the valley, often inverted, dwarfing everything else. At odds to the way our vision works, it is darkness, the unfixed shadow that illuminates the crook & the crag, depth & render. Like a moving secret text that is every day otherwise hidden in plain sight.

LUMENS

We often seek shelter when bad or unsettled weather is forecast.
We plan to stay indoors for the comfort & certainty it can provide us.

The rain, turbulent weather combine with scarped terrain offering us an uncertain perspective and the fluctuating light dances across ancient landscape. By chance and speed a photographer positions for a crescendo .

In the uncertain weather it is true that we lose power & control and yet the uncertainty we plan to avoid is often truly wonderful, often eliciting the adventure & beauty we seek.

THE TWILIGHT STORM

In Australia, the lucky country, long hot summer days are often cooled by a fast moving sudden down pour of rain & storm activity that loom up in the afternoon. Here is a sequence of photos taken on one afternoon in December 2020. Large & dramatic clouds in the distance were moving closer & expanding fast. Just as the sun light dimmed & fell below the horizon, the storm flashed to life streaking in the distance.
This afternoon was a major inspiration for me to take up landscape photography. I felt incredibly humbled to witness nature in all its' beauty and terror & lucky to walk away with these single moments in time. Our natural environment is truly the most precious and priceless asset we have & I encourage everyone everyday in every choice we make to choose our natural environment.
